Alex and her friends can also use powers that are illegal to use, which they must hide from the Authority, the leaders of the mentaries. One day, Alex is offered a spot at an exclusive boarding school for mentaries, which she has never heard of before. She wants to stay home, but she is forced to go.
Once at the school, she encounters entirely new problems. Her roommate does everything she can to make life miserable for her, and she's not the only one. Alex must watch out for magical fire, secret rituals, and detentions. Who has decided that she must be at the school? Why do powerful people care about her existence? Does it have anything to do with the illegal powers she can use?
