Forbidden kin, book 1 of the wall trilogy
The world is destroyed, toxic after years of emissions, and is forbidden to enter. Humanity has built walls between themselves and the dangerous. To manage overpopulation within the walls and the limited resources, the Swedish government rules with an iron fist; distributing resources, dictating where citizens can live and work, and deciding when a life is more of a burden than an asset.
They even control which children are allowed to be born. And anyone opposing the government's laws faces harsh punishment, with all illegitimate individuals who are apprehended disappearing.
